What does a career in transplant surgery actually look like in the UK?

Join the Herrick Society for the next session in our Conversations on the Future of Transplantation series with Miss Clare Pattenden, Consultant Renal Surgeon, Chair of the BTS Education Committee, Associate Director of Education at QEHB and Director of Studies at IPGMTS.

Unlike some countries, the UK does not have a single abdominal transplant surgical training pathway. Kidney and liver transplantation follow distinct surgical training routes, with different training requirements, operative experience and career pathways. The General Surgery curriculum specifically identifies renal transplantation with dialysis access separately from HPB and liver/pancreas transplantation.

This session will explore how these pathways work, where transplant-specific experience fits within surgical training, opportunities for fellowships and post-CCT training, and what trainees should consider when planning a career in transplantation.

There will also be an opportunity for questions and discussion with colleagues at different stages of transplant training.
